چکیده

Dr Marinos Elia (Cambridge) described the theoretical basis of compartmental analysis of body composition. Classically the body has been considered to be composed of fat and fat-free tissue. Fat is a relatively homogeneous compartment but fat-free mass (FFM) includes water, protein, bone, glycogen and small amounts of other constituents. He described how increasingly sophisticated methods of body composition analysis attempted to make measurements of each of these compartments of the body in order to re-assemble the components of body weight, without making assumptions about the relationship of one constituent to another, as required in traditional two-compartment models (Elia, 1992). He also described how some of the methods employed in body composition analysis were increasingly finding use outside this narrow field. In particular, he referred to work on bioimpedance tomography (Brown et al. 1994). This can be used to produce images of specific regions of the body, including heart, lungs and brain throughout cycles of activity, and to pinpoint specific abnormalities in these tissues. He suggested that further breakthroughs in both the measurement of body composition and scanning techniques, such as bioimpedance tomography, are most likely to come from physicists, but that input from nutritionists and clinicians would be essential in order to ensure that the greatest progress was made in producing answers to biologically-relevant issues.

Diabetic foot workshop: Improving technical and educational skills for nurses

Diabetes mellitus as one of the most common metabolic disorders has some complications, one of the main ones is diabetic foot (DF). Appropriate care and education prevents 85% of diabetic foot amputations. An ideal management to prevent and treat diabetic foot necessitates a close collaboration between the health team members and the diabetic patient. Therefore, improving nurses' knowledge a...

Macronutrient Intake and Inadequacies of Community-Dwelling Older Adults, a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND Anorexia of ageing may predispose older adults to under-nutrition and protein energy malnutrition. Studies, however, report a large variation in nutrient inadequacies among community-dwelling older adults. SUMMARY This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of the energy and macronutrient intakes and possible inadequacies in community-dwelling older adults. PubMed and ...

Symposium - macronutrient utilization during exercise: implications for performance and supplementation.

The review articles constitute a mini-symposium entitled “Macronutrient Utilization During Exercise: Implications for Performance and Supplementation” that were recently presented at the 2004 annual conference of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in Las Vegas, NV. Much controversy often surrounds macronutrient intake, utilization, and subsequent metabolism regarding exercise and ath...

The endocannabinoid system: directing eating behavior and macronutrient metabolism

For many years, the brain has been the primary focus for research on eating behavior. More recently, the discovery of the endocannabinoids (EC) and the endocannabinoid system (ECS), as well as the characterization of its actions on appetite and metabolism, has provided greater insight on the brain and food intake. The purpose of this review is to explain the actions of EC in the brain and other...

Effects of dietary macronutrient distribution on resting and post-exercise metabolism

Background Previous research has demonstrated that habitual dietary macronutrient distribution affects energy substrate utilization at rest and during exercise. The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the relationships between habitual baseline macronutrient intakes, expressed relative to bodyweight and percentage of total energy intake, and metabolism at rest and after exercise...

Cats and Carbohydrates: The Carnivore Fantasy?

The domestic cat's wild ancestors are obligate carnivores that consume prey containing only minimal amounts of carbohydrates. Evolutionary events adapted the cat's metabolism and physiology to this diet strictly composed of animal tissues and led to unique digestive and metabolic peculiarities of carbohydrate metabolism. The domestic cat still closely resembles its wild ancestor. Although the c...
